TRADESMAN Deal to Dealer Talents and Merchant Builds
Eight trees, climbing point costs, and a first-week plan that does not starve your hires.
The merchant is a talent build, not a loot stick. TRADESMAN: Deal to Dealer gives you a point each level and asks you to spend it down trees that get more expensive as you go — typically 1, then 2, then 3, then 4 gold points for deeper nodes. Refunds are limited; ninja patches have shuffled saves before. Spend as if the next road is already angry.
What the trees are for
Steam’s feature list groups talents as combat, trade, social, and survival. In play they split more finely. Community and official gameplay call out these jobs:
- Leadership — hire rare and legendary mercenaries, extra ware slots, the difference between peasants and a real roster. First pickup for almost every new save. Pairs with the mercenary hub.
- Combat training — the protagonist hits harder and unlocks shouts you press in the auto-battler. Required before lantern-mole roads. See combat.
- Tactics — positional rules. A well-known node makes the mercenary in position two take no extra damage from crits. Slot your sponge there.
- Animal handling — hire boars as fighters and haulers, later the bear/Bigfoot pipeline. Animals and carts.
- Cooking / culinary — recipes that feed the squad between fights. Strength of Seven is a secret once-per-save attack potion the studio spoiled in patch notes; you will not see a recipe in-game.
- Trade / ware nodes — extra goods for sale, extra wells, better stall tricks. Worth it after Leadership, not before.
- Survival / traps — notice traps farther away. Traps no longer hard-stop the cart; you still want fewer surprise chunks.
- Social — extra dialogue and quest leverage. Nice on a plot-heavy save, easy to delay.
You will not max eight trees. 1.0 content plus Wasteland still does not ask you to. Pick a lane: hire better people, hit harder yourself, or haul animals. Hybrid “one point everywhere” is how you arrive in Normingham with peasants.
A first-week spend order
- Leadership until rare hires unlock and you have at least one extra ware slot.
- A combat shout you will actually click (cleanse/redirect family).
- Animal handling if you want boars before bears; skip if you are staying human.
- Cooking once food is dropping faster than you eat it.
- Trap vision when night roads start feeling cheap.
Deep nodes behind 3–4 point walls should wait for a legendary you already own. Do not pay 4 points to hire a unit you cannot afford in coins. Cross-check the mercenary tier list so the Leadership gate you buy matches a real target (bear cub at Fishpool, paladin in a holy town, Bigfoot in the south).
Mercenary “talents” are a second system
Do not confuse merchant trees with merc pips. After fights, each hire fills a personal bar with ten random stat enhancements. You can reroll a merc’s talent by spending upgrade points or money (a 2024 patch added a currency toggle). Scrolls are separate: rarity-matched, two per merc if they are not duplicates. Hunter beast-scrolls were nerfed — combat again.
The merchant’s own one-shot potions (Strength of Seven: +10 attack forever, once) are not talent nodes. They are secret cook-work. If you find one, that is your build identity for the rest of the save.
Builds that match how you drive
- Thin trader — Leadership + ware slots, almost no combat. Relies on one stack and running away. Fine for reputation loops on safe roads.
- Taxi captain — social + Leadership, empty wells for passengers. Quests.
- Beast convoy — animal handling + cooking, boar/bear/Bigfoot core. High HP, messy lanes.
- Shout knight — combat tree plus a paladin hire. For cemetery and mole roads.
None of these need a third-party trainer. If a Workshop localisation remaps the talent screen hotkey, use the HUD S (or the icon) from controls. Patch notes that add or move nodes land on updates. After 1.0, expect Wasteland to add heat/dust survival options rather than a ninth tree — Wasteland.
Spend gold points like they were legendary scrolls. Because for the first ten levels, they are.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common merchant questions.
Which talent should I take first?
Leadership. Rare hires and extra ware slots do more than a small personal damage node. Then add a combat shout.
Can I respec the merchant?
Do not plan on a full refund. Mercenary pips can be rerolled with points or coins. Copy the save folder before experimental spends.
Do I need Animal Handling?
Only if you want boars and later beast haulers. Human squads work. See animals.
Where is the talent screen?
Use the skills icon on the HUD (S in English screenshots; some guides mention L). Full keys: controls.
