TRADESMAN Deal to Dealer Should You Buy the Cart?
A $5 GameMaker comedy sim that lets you choose how hard the road gets. 1.0 is out. Single-player only.
TRADESMAN: Deal to Dealer left Early Access on 27 August 2026. Steam still scores it Very Positive (about 80% across 1,400+ reviews). Price sat near $4.99 at launch after years at $2.99. Demo on the same store page. Single-player only. Steam Deck Playable. This review is for people searching “is it worth it,” not for a loot table.
What it is
You are a merchant with a cart, a horse named Horse, and a map of joke towns. Buy where goods are cheap, sell where the demand row lights up, hire four mercenaries plus a hauler, and fight auto-battles on the dirt. Every extra crate makes the next wolf meaner. AZAMATIKA printed that as the most important rule in the 1.0 letter. Ninety percent of the difficulty is the player. That is the hook and the joke.
If you want a trading sim with personality — pixel inns, chicken peasants, bears on the fifth slot — it delivers. If you want a live-service battle pass, look elsewhere. Hats (May 2025) and the later Donkey pack are supporter cosmetics with no combat edge. Links.
What works in 1.0
The economy is readable. Industrial, Military, and civilian tags sit on the stall. Tooltips list enemy buffs and road danger. The trading guide exists because those tooltips are the game. Combat is a side-view auto-battler you can shout through. Units flee instead of permadeath; the real wipe is dropped cargo. Combat.
The map grew. Wasteland (April 2026) added a western biome. Youngfield and a boss arrived with the August ninja patch. Fifty-three achievements. Workshop localisation. Steam Cloud. Average playtime around eleven hours; completionists wander much longer. The walkthrough and map are the practical next tabs.
The writing is dry and specific. Demand jokes (“it doesn’t saw if you hold it with two hands”) are the localisation. Talent trees for Leadership, cooking, survival, and combat give the cart a build without a spreadsheet tax.
What grinds
You will drive the same mill road for planks. Reputation 10,000 is a bar, even after gains were doubled. Some Steam achievements failed to unlock on Early Access saves (players named Bird’s Eye View and Black Scorpions). Ninja patches have rewritten folders. Copy AppData\Local\Tradesman — controls.
Recent reviews around 1.0 were mixed in a small sample while overall stayed Very Positive. That is normal when a price rise and a full release hit the same week. The loop did not become an MMO. It became a finished comedy cart.
Who should skip it
Anyone hunting weekly gift codes. This is a paid Steam game. Anyone wanting online parties. Anyone who hates reading tooltips. Anyone who needs a 4K action budget. System floor is light: 64-bit Windows 10, dual-core 2.0 GHz, 4 GB RAM, GTX 9-class, 500 MB disk.
Verdict
Buy it if the trailer’s muddy road looks like a weekend. Start thin. Read Getting Started before you fill four wells. Use the mercenary tier list before you spend a legendary scroll on a name you liked in a tavern. 1.0 is the same greedy cart with fewer excuses, a desert, a boss town, and a badge list. That is enough.
